About Recruitment

Recruitment, which occurs at the beginning of the Spring semester, is an intensive week-long series of structured events that you will attend in order to meet and converse with sorority members. As Recruitment progresses, the events become fewer and the time spent at each sorority becomes longer. Through a process of mutual selection, we hope you will return to the sororities where you feel most comfortable and with those that are interested in having you as a member. A $20 fee ($30 after the preferred registration deadline) is charged to participate in recruitment; this fee will be discussed at recruitment orientation on early December.

During the one-week recruitment process, you will be guided by your recruitment counselor, or RC. She will be with you every step of the way, and you should contact her with any problems or questions you may have. Your RC will only give you her first name because she is temporarily disaffiliated from her chapter during the recruitment period, meaning that she has no input in the recruitment process of her organization. Each RC acts as a representative of the Panhellenic community, not as an individual member of her chapter. This means you can feel comfortable talking to your RC about any chapter you visit because everything you say will be kept in strict confidence and will not affect where you end up. All RCs sign contracts confirming their commitment to this agreement.

You will receive a recruitment booklet at your orientation session at the end of the fall semester. It is a reference guide that contains a lot of important information about the recruitment process.

Formal Recruitment 2008 Schedule

Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 6.30 to 10.30 pm: Open House, Day 1

  • This is the first day of classes!
  • Meet your Recruitment Counselor at 6.30 pm sharp at your designated area.
  • You will go to the houses listed on your schedule from 7 to 10.30 pm.
  • Because this is the first time you are meeting the chapters, you should dress as if you are going out to a nice dinner with your parents. Warmth is key, as you may be spending some time outside. Warm dress pants and sweaters would be a good idea as well as gloves, coats and hats. There will be a place to hang your coats at each chapter.

Thursday, January 17, 2008, 6.30 to 12 am: Open House, Day 2 and Ranking Post Office

  • Meet your Recruitment Counselor at 6.30 pm sharp at your designated area.
  • You will go to the chapters that you did not attend the night before according to your schedule from 7 to 10.30 pm. The night will be very much like the night before.
  • After your last party, meet your RC outside the chapter and walk with your group to post office at the Hall of Flags in Houston Hall. You will then get instructions from your RC to select your top six chapters as your first choice and your last two chapters as your second and third choice.
  • Please note that you should not be talking to other members of your group about what you plan to rank each chapter. You should make decisions on your own, as that is the only true way to ensure you find the right chapter for you!

Friday, January 18, 2008, 5 to 7 pm: Schedule Post Office

  • Post Office will occur in Meyerson B1, with the following RC groups arriving at their designated times. Upon arrival, find your RC group. Your Recruitment Counselor will give you your schedule, as well as calling cards and name tags for Saturday.
  • RC groups 1-10 arrive at 5 pm
  • RC groups 11-20 arrive at 5.30 pm
  • RC groups 21-30 arrive at 6pm
  • RC groups 31-45 arrive at 6.30 pm

Saturday, January 19, 2008, 11 am to 8pm: Skit Round (Round 1) and Ranking Post Office

  • Arrive at the first chapter on your schedule 10 minutes prior to the time when the party starts. Late arrivals will not be allowed into the chapter unless you have called (215) 898-LAND (5263) and gained permission.
  • Make sure to remember you put a name tag on your coat (so that they can find your coat to give it back to you!) and your shirt, as well as bringing your calling cards for the day.
  • There will be a break for lunch from 12.45 pm to 1.45 pm. Be sure to arrive at your next party 10 minutes prior to the time the party starts.
  • The parties of this round are really fun! You will likely talk to sisters for a while and then be asked to sit while they present to you songs or skits. It’s a fun/funny time, so enjoy it!
  • The dress for this round is just like the last round. Stay warm!
  • When you leave a party, go directly to the next chapter on your schedule. If you have a free period, go stay warm and be sure to arrive at your next scheduled house 10 minutes prior to the beginning of that party.
  • At 6 pm, go to the Hall of Flags for your ranking post office. Don’t forget to come if you are not attending the last party of the day! Do not talk to other women about your rankings, as it may make others feel uncomfortable. You will be ranking your top four chapters as your first choice, and all of the others as your second and third choices.

Sunday, January 20, 2008, 5 to 7 pm: Schedule Post Office

  • Post Office will occur again in Meyerson B1, with the following RC groups arriving at their designated times. Upon arrival, find your RC group. Your Recruitment Counselor will give you your schedule, as well as calling cards and name tags for Monday.
  • RC groups 1-10 arrive at 5 pm
  • RC groups 11-20 arrive at 5.30 pm
  • RC groups 21-30 arrive at 6pm
  • RC groups 31-45 arrive at 6.30 pm

Monday, January 21, 2008, 1 to 7.30 pm: Philanthropy Round (Round 2) and Ranking Post Office

  • This is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - no classes.
  • Meet at your first chapter 10 minutes prior to your first party.
  • This round is very informal. You will be doing a different craft project at each chapter to support the sorority’s national philanthropy. Feel free to ask sisters what kind of philanthropy events they do throughout the year!
  • It is likely that you will be sitting on the floor, and you may get marker or glue on yourself, so please dress accordingly. However, please no sweatpants.
  • At 6 pm, the RCs will take you to the Hall of Flags. You will be ranking two chapters as your number one choices and two chapters as your second and third choices, respectively. Again, remember to be reflective and mature when making this decision.

Tuesday, January 22, 2008: Day Off!

Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 6 to 12 am: Schedule Post Office, Preference Round (Round 2), and Preference Card Signing

  • Meet your Recruitment Counselor at 6 pm to pick up your schedule at the Main Hall of Irvine Auditorium.
  • After picking up your schedule for the evening, you are free to go home and prepare, but remember that the first party starts at 8 pm.
  • Meet at your first chapter 10 minutes prior to the party time.
  • This roundis a beautiful ceremonial experience. As such, dress is more formal. A nice cocktail dress or skirt and blouse are appropriate. Make sure to dress warmly!
  • After the last party ends at 10 pm, meet with your RCs at that party and walk directly to the Main Hall of Irvine Auditorium. You MAY NOT talk to each other about recruitment at this time – this includes all conversation, cell phones, texting, etc. You MUST come directly from your last party to bid signing; do not stop anywhere along the way.

Thursday, January 24, 2008: Bid Day!

  • Stay by your phone starting at 7 pm to wait for a call from your Recruitment Counselor to find out if you received a bid.
  • If you have received a bid, report to Houston Hall at 8.30 pm to receive your bid. Dress is casual.

CONGRATULATIONS!
